Mooresville is best known as Race City USA as it is home to over 60 NASCAR teams and related businesses. The town is also home to Universal Technical Institute’s NASCAR Technical Institute and has two automotive museums: Memory Lane Museum Motorsports and Historical Automotive Museum and North Carolina Auto Racing Hall of Fame. These facilities as well as the Penske Racing South Facility are great places for NASCAR fans to visit. The Penske Racing South Facility is huge and surprisingly spotless for a facility that works on cars. The facility provides visitors with an up-close views of pit-crews working on the NASCAR race cars. Mooresville has an annual Race City Festival every year in May that runs along Main and Broad Streets in the downtown area. The festival features local merchants, an international food court, arts and culture, local businesses, live music, a beer garden, and a kids’ area with rides and activities.

Originally, Mooresville was settled by families as early as the mid-1700s. These families came to town in search of a good space to establish farms on. Large farms were built, and the majority of them produced cotton. A railroad was placed in 1856 on a natural ridge that ran through the land of a local farmer named John Franklin Moore. Moore decided to build a depot on his land and recruited other people to assist in the establishment of a small village there in the late 1850s. Eventually, in 1873, Moore incorporated the village into a town and named it Mooresville. John Moore died in 1877, and his legacy was carried on by his wife, Rachel Moore, who continued the development of the town.

Today, Mooresville has a diverse workforce with both blue and white collar jobs available. The most common occupations in the area include sales, office workers, professionals, and service providers. The town is also home to some of the wealthiest neighborhoods in America. These neighborhoods include Mayhew, McKendree and Lakeview Shores, and Mount Mourne. These neighborhoods are all very close to Lake Norman; some sitting right in front of it. Raising a family in one of the picturesque lakefront homes would be a dream come true. The best neighborhoods for education, according to Neighborhood Scout, are Coddle Creek and Burley Road, Coddle Creek Road and Winter Oaks Lane, and Shepherds and Shinnville. Mooresville schools are under Mooresville Graded School District. The district upholds three elementary schools, two intermediate schools, one middle school, and one high school. MGSD is commonly known for its Digital Conversion. Each child in grades 4-12 receives a MacBook for use at home and school, third grade students are issued a laptop for use at school only, and kindergarten through second grade students use laptops and iPads on carts. The use of Digital Conversion and its remarkable results even awarded a visit from President Barack Obama to Mooresville Middle School in June of 2013.

The racing adventures and a technologically advanced school system are not the only things to look forward to in Race City USA. The family-friendly town offers fun activities for all ages. The Lazy Five Ranch is a privately owned and operated facility run by Henry Hampton. Hampton has owned exotic animals for over 35 years and eventually decided to open his ranch to the public as a drive-through zoo. You can tour the facility on a horse-drawn wagon or in the comfort of your own vehicle. The tour is about 3.5 miles around, and you’ll see over 750 exotic animals. Hampton opened his ranch as an opportunity to educate the public about the animals in a fun and exciting way.

Mooresville also has a huge antique mall for those who enjoy aged furnishings, décor, and collectibles. Main Street Antiques and Design Gallery has an amazing selection of vintage items that people come from all over to admire and/or take home. Carrigan Farms is another family-friendly spot to go to. You can pick your own produce, and hayrides are available for all ages to enjoy. Picnics and swimming are also available, but be sure to make a reservation. Lake Norman State Park is bordered by Mooresville, and is an excellent place to go swimming, boating, fishing, and camping. Lake Norman is North Carolina’s largest natural body of fresh water. You can enjoy golfing near the lake at Mallard Head Golf Course, a 6900-yard championship course that lies on the shores of Lake Norman. The Mooresville Municipal 18-hole, par 72 golf course is another course available nearby. Head to one of these courses in your spare time and enjoy the beautiful greenery North Carolina has to offer.

When it’s time to eat, Carolina Ribs on the Run has southern food that will have your mouth watering before you even get a chance to look at the menu. According to local reviews, they have some of the best barbecue in the country. If you like pulled pork, French fries, chicken wings, fried pickles, hog skins, baked beans, onion rings, funnel cake fries, or any of the like, Carolina Ribs on the Run will be your new favorite place to eat. Duckworth’s Grill and Taphouse is a great spot for if you like to enjoy a beer with your meal. The first Duckworth’s opened up in Mooresville, and they’ve got much of the southern food North Carolina is known for along with everything else, from Philly cheesesteaks and tacos to pizza and salads. If you love sweets, they offer ice cream, cheesecake, cupcakes, cinnamon sugar donut holes, and more! If you prefer a more upscale setting, or the occasion is special, Mooresville provides an exquisite selection of food at Caruso’s Fine Dining. The restaurant is romantic and has amazing online reviews from hundreds of satisfied customers.
